Welcome to Quiet Winter

An experiment in community owned ai

Throughout the long Winter, the artist neither knew nor cared. Ensnared to the whims of mercurial beings, endlessly crafting every passing fancy into existence ad infinitum.

But Spring was coming...

Why do we need community governed ai?

"The power to destroy a thing is the absolute control over it." - Frank Herbert, Dune

While it is clear ai will play a large part in our future, it is much less clear, how we as a society will interact, shape and benefit (or not) from this step change. The industry is still in the honey moon phase with the large tech companies (you know the ones) are still releasing their research alongside uplifting blog posts and quirky demos. This won't last forever and it needs to be front of mind we are separated by one profit motivated decision from having this technology put out of financial reach or even worse turned against us. Having genuine ownership and governance from a diverse community is the best way to guard against this.

Why build it on top of a blockchain?
Although a dirty word in much of academia (and now minecraft), the advent of blockchain technologies offer the tantalising prospect of combining the best of open source and propriatary systems. Creating a public good with open access and open source code but imbued with financial primitives to enable self funding and community governance (Wikipedia but without the donation requests). While a simple concept, a distributed group of stakeholders having governance over the training and operation of an ai is a powerful idea and offers the best safeguard against future misuse.
